All Things Strings

The All Things Strings Community is a wonderful resource in so many ways. It’s a great place to connect with colleagues, post all manner of media, and have important discussions about one’s art. It’s also a perfect opportunity for the editors of Strings magazine to talk with a very active group of string players. In this spirit, I was hoping to solicit your feedback on a topic that is near and dear to so many string players’ hearts: your favorite string quartet.

Though I’m asking for your absolute favorite, it’s quite alright if you have more than one—for some players, choosing just one would be impossible. To which piece or pieces do you return again and again, and what is it that makes the music so powerful to you? Are there any particular quartets about which you want more guidance and player insight? This is rather a broad topic covering much beloved repertoire, and I’m sure there’ll be some overlap, so I’ll follow up in coming weeks with questions about particular styles or composers. Thank you so much for your input; in our efforts to make Strings magazine as useful to readers as possible, it is a great help to be able to talk to string players about what interests them.

Because this is the first in a series of conversations about chamber music, I’m going to ask that instead of responding here, you click on this link and add your comments to the discussion I’ve created in the chamber-music group. And if you haven’t joined already, feel free to add your name to our roster of chamber-music lovers. Thanks again for your help!

My favorite, obviously, is The Hampton (Rock) String Quartet (www.HamptonStringQuartet.com). Check out HSQ's newest CD, "HSQ: All Zeppelin", especially "In My Time of Dying" - really amazing. Esoteric, but amazing. Go to the CD page on the HSQ Website, or go to iTunes.

I'm going to name two. Why? Because I'm a renegade! Or, I'm indecisive, I can't decide... Anyway, lately I've been quite fond of the Cypress SQ, and the Jupiter SQ. Both have great arrangements & a marvelous sound, IMO.

My favorite is "Emerson string quartet". If such thing, as Perfection exists - it exists in sounds of this group. No matter what they play - Grieg, Dvorak, Barber, Haydn - touches my heart and soul deeply! I am professional violinist, play in established string quartet, give concerts, as well and these 4 fantastic guys - are inspiration for our group always.
