Jonathan Russell

Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin by Jonathan Russell-Part 1

When I first received the violin, my main emotion was that I was surprised. After the surprise went away, I realized that I was also honored to be chosen to be the caretaker of the Daniel Pearl Violin. By playing and talking about the violin, I hope to carry on Danny’s message of world peace through music. He always brought his violin wherever he went. When he was out of the country, he would carry his violin with him to find a local jam session and meet new people. During my tour in Hungary, I had a similar experience jamming at 11 at night, with people who didn’t speak English, but it didn’t matter, because everyone there could play music. Like him, I wish to play for international audiences to better send out his message. I have performed twice on it already. The violin has a bright, full tone, and I imagine that’s the way Danny wanted the world to be.

Just a little background: Jonathan is a gifted young player. He's the recipient of one of two Daniel Pearl Memorial Violins, constructed by Jonathan Cooper and loaned for one year through the auspices of the Mark O'Connor String Camp. Pearl was an amateur violinist and Wall Street Journalist murdered by terrorists while investigating the 9-11 terror attacks.
