Best New Artist, a Jazzer and a String Player to Boot

The selection of double bassist Esperanza Spalding as Best New Artist was one of the biggest surprises at the 2010 Grammy Awards held on Feb. 13 in LA. It's the first time a jazz player has won that category and to the best of my knowledge the first time a string player has had a chance to put that award on the mantle—correct me if I'm wrong. Spalding, a former Berklee grad and bass instructor, has a new CD, Chamber Music Society, with great string arrangements. She's also the subject of a recent Strings cover. Read her interview here.
