Music choices to advance a student

Thanks so much, Diane, for the input. I had never used the Sitt Etudes but I'm using numerous others. I think I've decided to use Smartmusic.com to advance my students and I've started them on a vigo…

Music choices to advance a student

Kelly, Smartmusic.com is a place you can join and your students can join off you. It has lots of sheet music they can play from and hear it played. Sheet music costs me so much I'm hoping that betwee…

Thanks, Kelly, for your help. I can't ask this particular student about movies because they are homeschooled and television is limited. Movies are pretty much chosen by the Mom but they have a large…

I teach mostly young children the violin and have a love for it. I now have a 15 year old who is quite good and has completed music theory, loves fiddle music, is great at sight-reading, uses vibrato…

Yes, I am a HUGE fan of SmartMusic too. And the subscription pricing a much simpler than it used to be -- just a simple fee per computer per year. For this student, you can really raid the SmartMusic string and full orchestra library for exploring d…

Thank you for the very useful information. Just because we aren't with the big towns, doesn't mean we aren't good performers. You have helped me more than you will know and I will check into the information you have provided. I'll give you a report back after I do my "research" that you so graciously have provided. God Bless You!

Hi Theresa,

I have taught in rural situations as well, and sometime you just have be practically a one woman shop! It is a lot a work, but it is SO good for the kids.
It is good you are already having your students play together, as duets. Next step is chamber music, and then you are just a few steps away from your own orchestra!

But before that happens, you can check out SmartMusic, if you haven't already. It not only has the method books you already use, but also has a method book called Orchestra Expressions which has wonderful accompaniments. PLUS, it has a huge library of many levels of string and full orchestra repertoire to at least simulate the orchestra experience. PLUS many other wondrous features to enhance your teaching. The yearly subscription is a bargain.

As for moving your students forward, my studio has benefited in recent years from participating in the ASTA CAP [Certificate Advancement Program]. Students prepare scales, etudes and pieces for an annual private exam, moving up at least one level of the eleven level curriculum each year. I believe the ASTA CAP program is now available in every state -- check with your state ASTA chapter.

Also, ACMP [The Chamber Music Network] might be able to give you guidance, and perhaps some support, in setting up some chamber music coaching for your advanced students.

Best Wishes,
