Strings could publish some instrument posters with photos and technical drawings, as the Strad Posters. There are many instruments in the USA that could be featured. www.manfio.com

Yes, try another A (Jargar or Larsen), I think you will like it. Violinists don't use the Dominant E also. www.manfio.com

Ann, I like Dominants with a Larsen or Jargar A too, but many professionals don't like them because they say they say Dominant's life is too short. www.manfio.com

Hi! Thanks! The photos are by my friend Andres Lepage, he is a pro violist, he helps me with the set up of my violas and also take the photos, which I find great also. This wood is red maple, I got it from www.curlymaplewood.com but I use wood re…

The photos are also very good. The wood looks to be American, much like Oregon Big Leaf Maple. Can you tell me the source? Also how did this viola get the name of Alma Mahler?

Hi! I oil varnish my instruments in about 7 days and 7 days later they can go to the concert room. To me a varnish that never dries properly is a bad varnish. I use a very thin coat of solid vaselin under the bridge feet so that it will not stick to…

Bellissima! That is a really good looking instrument! With oil varnish (or presumably with spirit as well) how do you know when it is dry enough to set up (i.e. so the bridge will not stick or the instument will not mar easily?

I agree with Ulf, the viola sound must not be unfocused, dark is one thing, unfocused and hollow sound is another (bad) thing. Michael Tree (Guarneri Quartet) told me that the viola must have a focused sound in order to face the cello in quartet, a…

Thanks! It`s oil varnish colured with madder lake and a bit of bitumen. You can listen to a sound sample of one of my violas, Harold in Italy played by Alberto Lepage with the Cordoba Orchestra, here: http://www.ipernity.com/doc/91953/6596049/ www…

You are wellcome! Non ce di che!!!

Hi Keith! The problem of removing the current varnish is that iit will be difficult to you to find a good luthier willing to make this kind of job. You may try it yourself, but varnishing a violin is not an easy thing because you have lots of endgra…

Thanks! It seems that ther is a consensus that Fluorescent Black Lights are the best lamps for making a UV box (if you google UV box violin you will find lots of stuff). I use an UV box during the night. I mix the Marciana varnish with pumice (not…

NYC VIOLA TRIP - I

I`m just back from my annual NYC viola trip. I`m very tired... It was too busy... but I found time to see the James Ensor exhibition (at MOMA) and the kandinsky Exhibition (at the Gugenheim).

I met Sue Gingold, of the NYC Opera, she knew Sacconi and was a friend of the Wurlitzer's for many years. She studied with Brunno Giuranna in Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Now my viola "Fiammetta" will be in the hands of Sue Gingold on the pit of the David H. Koch Theater, on the Lincoln Center, NY. Sue res… Continue

Hi! I am a new member of this forum, I'm a maker specialized in viola making. My violas are loosely based in Andrea Guarneri, and I make them in the 16, 16 1/2 and 17 inches. Ciao!
