I'm an American and have lived in Kenya for the past three years. There are lots of carjackings and robberies that happen where I live. I've been carjacked and held at gunpoint before! Last December my violin was stolen from my car. A friend and I m…

Have you checked out the Times' Good University Guide? That helped me a lot in planning my studies in the UK. You can use them to compare schools based on different criteria- maybe looking at the schools offering music programs based on 'entry stand…

The best thing to do is get involved in recitals. If you have a teacher they should give a recital every semester or year. If they don't, ask them when and where you could perform a piece. If you don't have a teacher, ask any teachers that you know…

Karis added a discussion to the group Violinists
I'm thinking about getting a postgrad degree in performance on violin and am looking at various schools in the UK. There doesn't seem to be a lot out there unless you look at the Royal colleges/academies. Most uni's I've looked at don't have the spe…

Karis replied to Corinthius's discussion 'Double Stops' in the group Violinists
Try playing scales with double stops to start with. Start with easier ones, like sixths, and then do octaves, thirds, fifths, fourths, etc. Start off playing them very slowly using a long, slow bow and listening for intonation. Make sure your bow so…

Profile
I am currently living in a little village in the mountains of Kenya working as director of music at an international school. Before this I worked as a private Suzuki strings teacher and was a professional musician in the USA in orchestras, quartets, trios and solos. I have toured and performed in the Caribbean and the UK. There isn't much opportunity for music performance in Kenya but I have performed with the Nairobi orchestra and have gone on various tours with the Kenyan Conservetoire of Music to surrounding countries. I am currently working on expanding my repertoire and considering auditioning for a Master's in performance either in Europe or the USA. My main instrument is violin, which I started learning with the Suzuki method when I was six, but I can also play viola, cello, double bass, piano and ... bagpipes! I speak English, Spanish and Swahili.

Dear Karis:

Regarding your interest in studying in Israel, I have little experience. However, I have some "real" contacts for you and through them you will find out the information you seek.
1. Eyal Hofmekler, Luthier in Jerusalem: tel: 011-972-2-563-2938
2. Jerusalem Music Centre (www.jmc.co.il) tel 011-972-2-623-4347

Since we're in the same time zone, there should be no real hassle for you to simply call; and don't worry about speaking Hebrew, everyone at these numbers also speak perfect English!
Enjoy!
