Yes, I am currently taking lessons with two faculty at NYU for film scoring (Ron Sadoff, who's the head of the department and Ira Newborn who scored the Naked Gun trilogy). I would like to do film scoring as a career, and also keep performing-compos…

The ring theme certainly is dark. I think the LOTR score has the prefect combination of light and dark themes. My dad pointed out that at the concert, people cheered for the themes the same way they cheered for the actors' entrances. I also got to m…

Daniel Pearl Violin-Performing Danny's Groove

The first time I played Danny’s Groove live was at a concert in Vermont. I had never played with this band before and didn’t know how they would react to the song. They played it very well on the first time. The funk section was very easy for them to understand. The second time I played Danny’s Groove was at a Friends of Daniel (FODfest) concert with Todd Mack. The very noticeable difference between these two times playing was that at FODFest, there were a whole lot of guitars. I played with my… Continue

Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin-Writing Danny's Groove

After the first recording session of my new CD, the pianist who was on it, Ron Drotos, suggested that I compose a song for it. I decided that I would write a piece in honor of Daniel Pearl, because I was inspired by his message of peace through music, and because I was recording the CD on the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin.
I started off writing Danny’s Groove by thinking of a bebop-like melody. I started writing something based on a few songs that I had heard. For the bridge of the song, I wrote… Continue

Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin by Jonathan Russell-Part 1

When I first received the violin, my main emotion was that I was surprised. After the surprise went away, I realized that I was also honored to be chosen to be the caretaker of the Daniel Pearl Violin. When he was out of the country, he would carry his violin with him to find a local jam session and meet new people. During my tour in Hungary, I… Continue
