I guess I'm what's called in pub session circles a "second fiddle". That is, I tend to play counter melodies or outright harmony parts to fiddle tunes that I've played for years, or, I play accompaniment along with singers.
I do love the harmony part of violin playing rather than the melody. This really come from our inner musical sense when playing along with someone or try to improvise a song being played.
