ISSMA stands for Indiana State School Music Association. It's this big solo and ensemble contest that happens every year. You perform with a group or by yourself in front of a judge. You get graded. You get either a gold, silver or bronze. It's very stressful. Each year, you move up a level. Group 1 is the highest you can go. I went Group 2 this year. I'm not sure if I'm going to go Group 1 next year or not. But, it's a lot of fun and really exciting. I love being a part of it!

@Kasey-Thanks a lot, but I'm done with my research paper now. :P What does ISSMA stand for? Is it kinda like Bands of America that my band geek friends go to every year? They go to competitions fairly often, and it's the same as you described. My school's band has mountains of trophies, and they're all stacked in the band room now b/c they ran out of room in the trophy case outside, lol! I wish my school had an orchestra program, but we just don't have the support.

OH! Lucky you! I saw him play once here in Massachusetts. What I would give for a chance to meet him. Tell him hi from the String community. :-)

Almost forgot to inform you, but Itzhak Pearlman is here in Jerusalem with his [visiting] summer violin program. He'll be here for about 3-weeks; hope to get downtown & meet him during one of his master classes!

@Kelly: Well....a contest is always some kind of test about your ability to play your instrument. I attend ISSMA contest twice a year and it really does judge you on your playing. You get rated from partcipation to golds. When you go to the contest as your whole orchestra group, like organizational contest, it's really important to do well! You get graded so much and the pressure is so high, it's almost like the SAT. And, all of the other high schools know how you did and either look up or down at you. With my case, they look up. :) But, that's some kind of a standarized testing for orchestra. I hope that helps you with your research! I'm sure every state has a contest like that. So research those. I hope I helped! :)

They recommend for starting players to actually try buying this tool where you place it between the bridge and the fingerboard and play until you get used to the area where you're supposed to play. That's what they do when you're in middle school, like 6th grade. But, if that doesn't work, then just try watching where you are sometimes and then get adapted to the area until you don't have to look anymore. I hope that helps!!
