Can anyone help me find actual data on standardized testing in relation to orchestra/musical ability? I've tried Google Scholar, but all the resources that come up require you to purchase them in order to read the full text. As you can probably imagine, that doesn't help me with my research paper at all.
Thanks!

I recommend the bowing vids on this web-site.
http://www.toddehle.com/id69.html Seems that somewhere I saw something on "figure 8" bowing, which was explained helps keep the bowing straight.

Mostly it's just practice. When you're practicing and want to work on your bowing, try going really slowly, and watch yourself. Being in front of a mirror helps, because you can see how straight your bowing really is.

Does somebody know the professional orchestra freelance scene in London? I would like to join some orchestras. In Switzerland I have played in a couple of freelance orchestras, but here I don't have the right contacts.
can somebody give me advice?
Thanks

Hi. My name is Jean. Have been taking violin lessons for 1 1/2 years. Am studying etudes out of the Wohlfahrt book and A Tune A Day book and almost finished with Suzuki Book 1. Went to a festival last weekend sponsored by The Old Town School of Folk Music here in Chicago. It was wonderful. I so wished I could join them as they asked anyone to come up. But I need the music in front of me to play and none of hem used sheet music or a book. I do have their songbook but am having a difficult time memorizing the tunes. Some of the fiddlers don't even read music but they can play wonderfully by ear.I used to be able to memorize some tunes on the piano but not yet the violin. Maybe because I am older now (59) and I was a kid when I took piano lessons. But I am going to keep trying so I can join them next year hopefully. They had so much fun.

Hey Violinist Friends - what a great site! It took me a while to discover it - so busy writing my method books, producing DVDs and CDs.... I posted some photos of my students at Cambridge Center for Adult Ed in Massachusetts. I teach an ABCs of Violin Teaching Course there if you are ever interested in traveling to Boston. Here are the photos: http://www.allthingsstringscommunity.com/photo/photo/listForContributor?screenName=2j5x5ozcl1l2t
Best wishes to all!

"Ain' no thang!"

Papa Haydn, eh? OK, I'm assuming we're talking about the famous theme which (according to apocryphal legend) Haydn wrote to wake up the slumbering, after dinner crowd at his concerts. All the more reason to keep those initial bow strokes short (but "inb the string") close to the end of the fingerboard. When that forte "D" comes along, go right back to the frog and dig in "subito". Most "easy transcriptions" have this note as a whole note, so maintain your index finger pressure and bow speed throughout the stroke.
