All Things Strings

Hi,
I have a Charles Plumerel cello made in 1840 in Mirecourt, France.  The front edges are all splintering.  They look terrible and I want to have them repaired.  What is done to smooth and strengthen them?  I've heard that there's some kind of wood dope/filler and that they can be sanded.  I never "drag" my cello along a carpet.  I've been very careful.  But I'm at a loss for what to do and who should do it.  I live in Brooklyn, NY.  Any ideas?

Hi Martha,

I called a good violin maker in NY who could not think of anyone doing repairs in Brooklyn, but he recommends you try Joe Tannen, 212-663-6219. He's very good and very fair. Edges can be glued back on, new wood can be added. Just make sure to take it to a professional.
