All Things Strings

I have an anouncement to make: I hate classical music-never cared for it. We who play cello do we have to submit to listening to cello music to be strictly classical?? We are in the 21 century to be just thinking music in the 1700's or earlier! I just wonder why is it that we do not appreciate musicians like Jorane (canadian cellist who does alternative pop music). Or Adam Hurst from Oregon? Do we have to regard the string family to just classical?

You don't need to listen to just classical if that's not the kind of music you like! You will enjoy playing more if you play the kind of music you like to listen to. As I'm a classical musician (mostly) I'm probably not a good deal of help here but maybe you could check this out for starters. Happy searching :)

Another good one! I'm going to check her music out. I listened to "Stay", and I really liked it!

I'm a closet head-banger myself. I play classical and I do like classical, but every once in a while I have to feed the need....check out the Finnish group Apocalyptica. They play electric cello to a heavy metal genre. As you know, I play the viola, but I can play right along to this....the viola and cello are practically brothers.

I know that I don't have to listen to classical but I just got the latest issue of Strings magazine that has Alisa Weilerstein showcased and I looked her up and she plays nothing but classical. Her playing is phenomenal but it's just that there are like her, a lot of ppl that have boxed themselves in to just playing classical! To me it's just plain annoying. Thnks for the links and I already know of escala and bond.

Don't forget Zoe Keating - http://www.zoekeating.com/ & Break of Reality - http://www.breakofreality.com/

I've gone through some of the same frustrations you're voicing ... heavy metal & progressive rock are my favorite styles of music & I love to improvise & jam with people...

The reason we learn classical is the same as why we read the "classics" in school - it's establishing common culture & that just happens to be the main one that's established ... it's just the tradition of the last 300 years or so ... if it's not your cup of tea, then no worries!

Thank you for your response and link. Let do a real shout out to those who are pig headed to one type of music let alone the instrument!

Yay! I just signed up for this board, being an adult student on cello. I figured I'd be alone in loving rock played on the cello. Rasputina is one of my favorite bands of all time! I suddenly feel not so scared of it here! ;oD

A lot of times it seems like classical music is really boring. Loving classical music has to do with listening to it a lot. I grew up on it. I don't think it's strictly accurate to say that classical music was only composed in the 1700's or earlier, though! Beethoven lived until the 1800's! And, of course, there were many other great composers that lived after him. Anyways, several musicians we would classify as classical have some albums out that are not classical at all. I've never listened to it, but I know that Rachel Barton Pine has a metal album out, and Joshua Bell has recently released an album that I think is jazz. And Yo-Yo Ma has a couple soundtrack albums out. And then if you want to venture outside the string family, there are many more possibilities.
