as a Master barber and teacher, the proper nail trim is to the end of the finger. and the way I mesure the correct length of a manicure, take the emory board place it on the tip of the finger and look at the angle of the nail to finger tip and with this I am not sure how this will effect the playability of your instrument. I also know some guitar and banjo players that keep longer nails to use as their picks

Well said. That is a good way to have them not toooo short is what you suggested. Palms up w/o the nails showing.

Yes. You are right it will interfere with the sound intonation nuances virtually everything. Not to mention how distracting it will be every time you notice!
I suggest they be short enough that with palms up you cannot see them.

I just started the violin in August last year. And, although i love it, there are times when i do miss my having longer nails and feel like i have "man hands" as Jerry Seinfeld would say. ;-)

I can only laugh - that is a real Seinfeld moment!

look at ur finger tips, ur palm facing your face, if you can see the nail going over the finger tip, they are too long. But you only need to cut the finger nails that you hold down the strings with :) hope i helped
