All Things Strings

Hi everyone,
Sorry if I'm being very cheeky here.
I have always been very interested in music, and recently found out that my Great (5x) Grandfather was Francois-Louis Pique. He appears to have been very highly regarded violinmaker, but I can't find much detailed information about him. I know he was at Mirecourt and also in Paris. I have read that he was the second finest violinmaker in France, which is strange given the lack of information on him.
It would be great to know more if anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it,
Thankyou,

Hello Lisa ~ I just saw your post here, and am delighted! My c1790 viola is a Francois Louis Pique, and I of course have done as much biographical research as I can. I agree that it is not easy tracking down information on such a famous person!

I will have to further search my messy records here, but your greatx5 grandfather was considered the first of the great French luthiers. He supposedly was the first to lengthen and reposition the necks on violins. Nicolas Lupot was his student, and gets all the press, some saying he surpassed his teacher. (One of Lupot's students was Gand, who is the maker of my teacher's viola. The luthier world is a small one, apparently!)

I have just joined this forum in order to contact you, and I see that there is a way which we could converse via private messaging, and I will try my luck at that. Then together, perhaps, we can do some serious sleuthing!

(My husband, being silly (practical?) says we had best not try to contact each other via "Instant Messaging" because we would never be awake at the same time - I live in Colorado in the US.)

I'm very excited about "meeting" a relative of my viola's maker, and I am so glad you posted your query.

I hope we can be in touch and learn more about our mutual interesting luthier!

Shirley
