I'm considering converting my China-made student Vinci violin to a Baroque setup. A Baroque setup includes gut strings, flatter bridge, shorter fingerboard, different tailpiece, no chin or shoulder rest, lighter bass bar.

Some of this easy enough to switch and some is not. The instrument itself has a thicker belly than my Capri and therefore has a thinner and weaker tone. The body doesn't vibrate as freely because of its thickness. With a Baroque setup, I'm guessing the instrument would be under less tension and would therefore have less vibrational force in the strings.

My concern is will the decrease in tension with the Baroque setup cause an already weak instrument to be even weaker? Would a louder instrument be a better candidate for this type of mod?

Seriously, the two changes I would NOT make right away would be the bass bar and fingerboard. Also, as easy as the bridge would be to change to a flatter one, there'd be no point in doing so if the fingerboard wasn't flattened to match it.
