I am in the market for a cello pickup but am having difficulty finding reviews on what the market has to offer. I need a pickup with enough volume that can compete with electric guitars and drums, but still has a sweet tone for smaller, acoustic combos where it is nice to hear the nuance of the instrument. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Over the years I've seen/heard many disappointing pickups for cello. Hands down winner is the David Gage Realist. It has two little pads that fit under the bridge feet. Surprisingly enough there is very little degradation of the acoustic response.
Tonally it's the next best thing to a quality recording mic. Hope that helps.

A DPA mic is the best I've ever used for getting a bigger sound without detracting from the instruments natural accoustical sound. It hangs in a sort of mini rubber cradle betwen the bridge and the string holder. It also has the advantage of being very quick and easy to attach and remove without risking any damage to the instrument.Of course you'll also need a good sound technician who knows what a cello should sound like to balance the band...

Strings published an article on pickups for bowed instruments about two years ago. It explains the various types of pickups and mentions brands that were available at the time. Some cellists, including Turtle Island cellist Mark Summer, weighed in on their choice of gear.

I agree that the DPA cardioid mic for cello with cello clip works best. You can use it alone or in combination with a baggs or fishman built in pickup to the bridge with a carpenter jack. The built in pickup can give you an extra boost if needed. Check out the Fishman Loudbox 100 it is great for small rooms, and can be used as a monitor.
